WING CHUN YEE GEE KIM YEUNG MA - THE WING CHUN STANCE
By Charles O'Neill

It's interesting how much you internalize as you train in Wing Chun. The things that consumed your thoughts when you first started, now, they don't even pass through your mind. I was sharing tips on training the Yee Gee Kim Yeung Ma (YGKYM), with some new students. It's amazing what comes back to you, as you break down the process.

So here are some tips for you when you practice YGKYM:

  1. Feet should point in 45 Degrees (not straight forward).
  2. Knees should be bent (almost like squeezing a melon or dog between your knees).
  3. Weight should be on the heels (not the balls) of the feet.
  4. Hips should be scooped (so the lower back is now straight).
  5. Back should be straight (not leaning forward or back).
  6. Chambered hands should be 'a paper's width' from the body.
  7. The wrists should not be broken 'up or down'.
  8. Elbows draw the hands back (not the hands drawing themselves back).
  9. Shoulders should be down and relaxed.
  10. Head held like someone is holding it on a string.
  11. Chin Tucked.
  12. The whole body should be relaxed.

If you look carefully you will see 5 triangles, drawing imaginary lines through the following points:

  1. With your feet: From the left heel to the right heel, then out following the angle of the feet.
  2. Lower legs: From the left heel to the right heel and from the heels to the a point passing through the knees,
  3. Upper body: From shoulder to shoulder, then from the shoulders to a point passing below the knees (upside down triangle).
  4. (& 5) The Arm: From the shoulder to the wrist to the elbow.

Keep Training, Keep Praying, Keep thinking.
